- Big Daddy & Deadvlei – a short walk from the 4x4 drop-off leads to Deadvlei’s white clay pan dotted with blackened camelthorn trees one of Africa’s most photographed scenes.
- Sossusvlei pan – the heart of the dunes, especially beautiful after rare rainfall.
- Sesriem Canyon – a scenic stop near the park entrance, carved by the Tsauchab River over time.
Getting There and Access
- Entry is via Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei. There are two gates, and guests staying inside the park can access the inner gate earlier for sunrise drives.
- The last stretch to Sossusvlei/Deadvlei includes a deep-sand section (about 5 km) where most travellers use a 4x4 shuttle service if not driving a capable 4x4.
Best Time To Go
The desert is spectacular year-round, but the most comfortable months are typically April to October (cooler mornings and evenings). For the best photographs, aim for sunrise and late afternoon the dunes glow in layers of gold and red.
